We prepared poly((4-octyloxy-4'-hexyloxybiphenyl)acrylate)(PA6B8) and poly((4-octyloxy-4'-hexyloxy-biphenyl)methacrylate)(PM6B8). Phase transition and mesogenicity were studied by DSC and X-ray powder diffraction measurements, and polarizing microscope observations. Both of PM6B8 and PA6B8 showed the existence of smectic A phase. However PA6B8 formed crystal and PM6B8 smectic A glass, which was interpreted by hindering the crystallinity due to the presence of the methyl group in PM6B8. We found that mesogenicity and crystallinity of the side-chain liquid-crystalline polymers were influenced by the α-substituent.
