We tried to determine anisotropic thermal conductivities and specific heats by characterizing the potical self-phase modulation in liquid crystals. A single-mode laser beam excited refractive index distribution due tothe photothermal effects in homogeneously-aligned liquid crystal films. The diffracted beam profile was characterized by both Kirchhoff's diffraction theory and heat conduction analysis, and thermal and/or optical properties of liquid crystals were simultaneously determined.
