Liquid crystallinity and photoreactivity of N-methyl-trans-stilbazolium dialkyl-sulfosuccinate ion complexes were studied. The liquid crystalline phases were identified by thermal analyses, polarized optical microscopy and temperature controlled X-ray diffraction analysis. For example, N-methyl-trans-stilbazolium dioctadecyl-sulfosuccinate ion complex exhibited a smectic-A type liquid crystalline phase at 90-120℃. The XRD analysis revealed the pitch of the layering is 7.3 nm, which supports a bilayer structure with an almost elongated conformation of the alkyl chains. The liquid crystalline and crystalline phases were irradiated by 150 w Xe lamp through UV32 optical filter for 20 minutes. The major product was syn-HH and syn-HT cyclobutane dimmer.
