Some disc-shaped triphenylene derivatives with terminal functional groups at the adjacent two long chains were synthesized in order to qualitatively investigate on the correlation between hexagonal columnar mesomorphism and rotational dynamics of molecule around the columnar axis. It was found that the carboxylic acids show Col_h mesophase, while the hydroxy compounds do not have any mesomorphism. The effect of intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction among the terminal functional groups on the Col_h behavior was discussed with some evidences of temperature dependent IR spectra.
