Transmission ellipsometry was used in order to evaluate two kinds of the azimuthal anchoring strength. The anchoring strength for the static twist distortion was measured by the torque balance method, and the anchoring strength which influences the LCD-driving was measured by the numerical fitting with the experimental result of electro-optical characteristics of both in-plane switching (IPS) mode cells and inplane switching twisted nematic (IT) mode cells. In case of the MLC-2051/Polyvinyl cinnamate (PVCi) system, the anchoring strengths obtained by the numerical fittings seem to be strong compared with the anchoring strength measured by means of the torque balance method.
