Photo-alignment properties of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) molecules on UV-irradiated dichroic azo dye films were examined. Pretilt angle, azimuthal anchoring energy, and voltage holding ratio of the NLC cell satisfied the value required for the TFT-TN-LCD. We are sure that the UV-irradiated dichroic azo dye films can be promising application to NLC aligning technique.
