The alignment characteristics of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using surface relief grating (SRG) structure has been investigated. The photo-induced SRG on azo-polymer was transferred onto the transparent photopolymer, and used as alignment substrates. Using one-dimensional (1-D) SRG, a homogeneous alignment of NLC was obtained. On the other hand, in the case of 2-D SRG, a homeotropic alignment of NLC was observed.
