The optical alignment method was applied to make the bistable nematic (Bi-nem) -LCDs. As alignment material, two kinds of polyimide SE-610 and PI-A (Nissan Chem. Ind.) were used. One of the substrates coated by SE-610 was rubbed to obtain strong polar anchoring and high pretilt angle. The other substrates coated by PI-A was irradiated by the polarized UV-light to obtain weak polar anchoring and no pretilt angle. We succeeded in preparing Bi-Nem cell by obtaining higher azimuthal anchoring energy than 1.0 × 10^<-5> [J/m^2].
