Abstract
Liquid-crystal (LC) electro-optic devices using nematic, as well as other kinds of LCs, such as smetic LCs exhibit a frequency modulation response together with the conventional amplitude modulation response to an operating voltage, if an LC device is doped with metal nanoparticles such as those of palladium, silver and others covered with LC molecules. We report the results of investigation aiming at explaining the frequency modulation through the dielectric research on these sample cells taking twisted nematic (TN) cells. It is shown that the Maxwell-Wagner theory, which deals with an oscillatory interface polarization between the fine particles and host medium, is valid for explaining this phenomenon.
