We have designed and synthesized a series of liquid-crystalline folic acids having molecular triblock structures consisting of hydrophilic pterin rings, chiral oligo (glutamate) moieties and lipophilic alkyl chains. These folic acids self-assemble to form stable hexagonal columnar phases composed of stacked tetramers. Supramolecular chirality is induced for the columnar phases by achiral ionic stimuli. Upon further heating, phase transitions from chiral columnar to chiral cubic phases take place keeping chiral superstructures of folic acids.
