Abstract
Voltage holding ratio (VHR) is one of the most important parameters which influences not only the display characteristics but also the durability of LCDs. In this paper, we investigated the influence of molecular alignment of liquid crystals on VHR. The VHR varies largely depending on the molecular alignment of liquid crystals, even if the same liquid crystal materials and the same alignment material have been used. This seems to be caused by the dielectric loss which is based on the phase lag of dynamic behaviors of LC molecules in the middle of the cell and in the vicinity of the alignment surface.
