Abstract

We synthesized axally chiral binaphthyl derivatives containing asymmetric center moieties, and added it to high temperature nematic liquid crystal (N-LC) mixture (4 compounds mixture) to prepare thermally helicity-controllable chiral N-LC (N^*-LC). The N^*-LC showed a left-handed helical structure when the temperature increased from -26 to 14℃. It became a nematic phase in the temperature range of 14 to 21℃, and then showed a right-handed chiral nematic phase when the temperature increased from 21 to 49℃. The helical polyacetylene (H-PA) was synthesized in the N^*-LC and the helical sense of H-PA was well controlled by changing the polymerization temperature.
