Abstract

Main chain liquid crystal polyurethanes (LCPUs) with hydroxyl and amino groups were synthesized by the polyaddition reaction of a diisocyanate group, -N=C=O with a dihydroxyl group, -OH. Their phase transitions and orientational behavior were examined. LCPUs with a hexamethylene chain did not exhibit a mesophase. LCPUs with a biphenyl core formed a monotropic nematic phase. LCPUs with a tolylene core revealed a glass transition and a nematic-isotropic phase transition. The schlieren texture was observed in the nematic phase. LCPUs with a tolylene core formed a nematic glass phase. The fibers of LCPUs were obtained by fiber-drawing in the liquid-crystalline state. The fibers of LCPUs having an azobenzene group showed a photoisomerization at room temperature.
