Abstract
Cubic phase is a liquid crystal phase with a three-dimensional periodical structure formed by self-organization through intermolecular interactions. The formation is determined by the balance of the size between the alkyl chains and core part of constituent molecules. In this paper, we chose the BABH-n as a starting Cub-phase -forming compound, and intended to investigate how the extension of the central π-electron system influences the Cub phase formation. The compounds synthesized were 1,2-bis(4'-n-alkoxyphenylbenzoyl)hydrazines (BAPBH-n) having a biphenyl core part and 1,2-bis(4'-n-allkoxynaphthoyl)hydrazines (BANH-n) having a naphthyl core part.
