Up to date, we have synthesized many phthalocyanato copper(II) derivatives, [(p-CnO, m-CmO)PhO]8PcCu, substituted by different chain length of alkoxy groups at the p, m-positions and investigated their mesomorphism. In this work, we have synthesized a novel series of the homologues [(p-C1O,m-CmO)PhO]8PcCu (1a-f) fixed a methoxy group at p-position, and clarified that their mesomorphism varies with the chain length (m) at the m-position. Very interestingly, the homologue 1a fixed two methoxy groups at the p, m-positions without any long alkyl chains showed a rectangular columnar(Colr) mesophase at high temperatures. Hence, this homologue 1a may be a flying-seed-like liquid crystal induced the by the bulky aryl groups without any long alkyl chains. Accordingly, we have furthermore synthesized additional plural homologues 2-5 without long alkyl groups, and established that the derivatives 4 and 5 are novel flying-seed-like liquid crystals.
