Schiff-base mesogen, 5ABCA, exhibits smectic B (SmB) and smectic A (SmA) phases. DSC experiments showed that the entropy of transition between as -grown crystal and SmB phase is smaller than that of 5CBAA, which has the invert ed CH=N moiety in the core part of molecule. We investigated the cause of the small entropy of transition using FT-IR measurement, heat capacity calorimetry, and structural analysis of as-grown crystal of 5ABCA. Experimental results revealed that the conformation of alkyl chain is partially disordered in the as- grown crystal at room temperature, resulting in the small entropy of transition.
