Chiral paramagnetic nitroxide radical (NR) liquid crystalline (LC) compounds have a great potential as novel molecular materials because they would be expected to show some fascinating features such as magneto-optical effects. However, their high LC phase temperature range resulting from high melting point interferes with both basic and application researches as the novel materials. Therefore, low-temperature chiral NR-LC compounds are eagerly anticipated to be synthesized. Here, we report the first design and synthesis of low-temperature NR-LC compounds containing a fluorine atom in a molecular core, which affects molecular planarity and symmetry.
