The radical polymerization of the 0th generation liquid crystalline polypropyleneimine dendron (4) was carried out to give polymethacrylate 5. DSC thermograms indicated that the dendron 4 and the resulting linear polymer 5 were thermotropic liquid crystals. Polarizing optical microgram (POM) image of 5 showed a typical focalconic fan texture due to smectic phase. When the mixture of their a linear polymer 5 and nematic liquid crystal (1/99, wt/wt) was heated to isotropic melt and then gradually cooled, the dark field was observed. Conoscopic observation showed a typical isogyre and indicates the homeotropic orientation on the glass. Thus small amount of 5 could induce NLC to align vertically.
