Viologen compounds having different counter anions (12V12X, (X = Br, BF4, Tf2N)) were synthesized. Photoresponsive behavior of 12V12X in chloroform or DMF was investigated under atmosphere by measurement of UV-vis absorption spectra. All of the viologen compounds formed a dimer in solvents, when they irradiated with UV light. The dimer was considered to be formed through radical cations produced by the UV irradiation. 12V12Tf2N formed liquid-crystalline phases. Therefore, 12V12Tf2N sandwiched between two slices of quartz glass were reduced at 190 ℃ upon irradiation with UV light.
