Chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) are a class of lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) mostly found in drugs, dyes, nucleic acids and so forth. They are typically formed in aqueous solutions of plate-like molecules having a poly-aromatic core and polar peripheral groups. In this study, we prepared an ionic hydrogel and then incorporated chromonic molecules as secondary cross-linkers. The chromonic aggregates bind to the polymer network and they align in bulk during the swelling process of hydrogels.
