Diastereomers consisting of a styrylterthiophene-based chromophore and two lactate moieties were synthesized. These diastereomers exhibited ordered smectic crystal phases in which the chromophores tilted from and parallel to the layer normal. In the smectic crystal phase with the chromophores parallel to the layer normal, no bulk photovoltaic effect and electroluminescence were not observed while bulk photovoltaic effect and polarized electroluminescence were observed in the smectic crystal phase with the chromophores tilted from the layer normal.
