We investigated the rotational and translational motion of liquid crystal droplets (LCDs) dispersing on microstructured electrodes to visualize the electric field distribution. LCDs under electric fields show rotational behavior depending on the positions of LCDs. Moreover, LCDs show translational motion with an increasing electric field. After a comparison between numerical calculation and experimental results, we succeeded in visualizing the electric fields and the electrostatic energy density on microfabricated electrodes. The detection accuracy and the spatial resolution are 5 V m1 and 10 m, respectively.
