In the chevron geometry of a smectic phase, making defect free smectic layers is closely related to control the bending direction of layers. It is possible to select this direction by encapsulating liquid crystals in the closed rectilinear space and cooling it under the strong temperature gradient from one end of the rectilinear space toward another end.
