The τ-Vmin of ferroelectric liquid crystal(FLC) material with negative dielectric anisotropy is an attractive mode because of their properties such as high contrast, fast line address time and wide operating temperature range. In this study, we investigated the possibility of the gray scale for the multi thickness cells using the τ-Vmin mode. The deferent thickness of FLC layer induced a change in the τ-Vmin characteristics. A combination of two areas with different thickness gave a possibility of 3 or 4 gray levels.
