Large electrooptic effcts of liquid crystal materials can have potential applications to various optical devices for a wider wavelength region. Fundamental optical properties of liquid crystals, such as refractive indices and transmission losses are investigated by using submillimeter laser (215μm). Refractive indices of K15(BDH) for ordinary and extraordinary rays are comparable with that in the visible region, and the birefringence is also large. Although the loss is larger by about two orders of magnitude than that of quartz which is an excellent window in the submillimeter region, the transmission of the liquid crystal cell is high enough.
