We measured the fluctuations in the lyotropic liquid crystal lamellar (Lα) phase and the sponge (L3) phase in a dilute region of surfactant concentration by the dynamic light scattering technique. We observed the concentration fluctuation induced by the thermal undulation of layers in the Lα phase and obtained the dependence of the effective rigidity kc of layers can the repeat distance d, which reflected the fluctuation-induced layer softening. Further, two kinds of fluctuation modes were observed in the L3 phase.
