The aim of this paper is to account for the historical development of English infinitives in terms of the realization of their external arguments. First, I point out different realization possibilities between bare infinitives and to-infinitives by examining infinitival complements to causative verbs. Then, I present a unified analysis of the two types of infinitives, paying special attention to the presence and/or absence of infinitival morphemes and the categorial status of the infinitive marker to in the history of English.
