It is already known that the hypophysis plays an important role for the development of diabetes. To Elucidate this point further, the author planned an experiment: the influence of hypophysectomy on the alloxan-diabets in rabbits was investigated after injecting 200mg., per kg. of body weight, of alloxan to 15 of the rabbits, previously hypophysectomized after Tanaka's modification of Nishio's original method.
The results are roughly as follows:
1) After injecting alloxan to the previously hypophysectomized rabbits, the blood sugar curve showed only a slight rise (maximum value; 220mg./dl.) in the 1st phase of reaction. The 2nd phase, appearing relatively early, showed severe hypoglycemia, while the 3rd phase showed slight, though temporary and fluctuating, hyperglycemia, which did not give rise to persistent diabetes.
2) In the pancreas, this group showed typical pathological changes of alloxan-diabetes and was in accordance with the control group.
3) The other endocrine organs and general organs did not show the so-called diabetic changes, but only secondary changes, possibly caused by hypophysectomy.
4) It is.quite sure, from the results stated above, that the increase of blood sugar by alloxan-injection is inhibited by hypophysectomy. This fact would be owing to the lack of adreno-corticotropic hormone (A. C. T. H.) and growth hormone, induced by hypophysectomy, when one takes account of the fact that the experiment of adrenctomy, stated in the former chapter showed the same result as that of hypophysectomy.
