Morphological changes of the pituitary-thyroid system have been studied in the prepuberal and puberal ferale rats. At the age of 30 days, AF-positive cells which had already been numerously differentiated in the anterior pituitary represented the appearance as the fully mature cells. There were no mean increase of AF-positive cells in number, and no changes in the cytological feature of the thyroid follicular cells on the 34th day of birth. However, on the day of vaginal opening (the 37th day), both the number of AF-positive cells in the pituitary and of mitotic cells in the thyroids, and the thyroid cell height became more significantly increased than in prepuberal period. The findings indicated that the pituitary-thyroid function was accelerated at the onset of puberty.
