Male and female rats were given multiple injection of 10mg/kg of testosterone propionate (TP) for 30days at 48hrs.intervals.Injection was started on the 10th, 40th, 70th, 100th and 150th day after birth.
The rate of growth of male rats was decreased, while that of female rats was increased by TP administration, particulary in the immature groups.
An increase in weight of the accessory reproductive organs and levator ani was conspicuous in the group of 10-or 40-days-old rats.A decrease in weight of the testis and adrenal gland of the males was also remarkable in 10-days-old rats. The weights of the thymus, ovary, and female's adrenal decreased after TP treatment in all groups.
DNA and RNA levels per unit weight in the testis were increased and those in the uterus were decreased by TP treatment.Animals of 10 and 40 days of age showed striking change in the amount of nucleic acids of these organs as compared with the other groups.
Lipid concentration per unit weight in the liver showed a decrease only in male rats of all groups.TP did not influence the total nitrogen amount and the water content per unit weight of the liver and thigh muscle.
Present experiments confirmed the following evidences:
1) Male rats manifest retardation of growth, while female rats acceleration after TP treatment;2) Immature animals are more sensitive to TP than adult ones;3) TP plays a role in lipid metabolism as well as in protein metabolism.
