In part I of this review, we explained the morphology and physiological function of the enteric nervous system (ENS) itself. Now in part II, we describe the role of ENS in colonic physiological functions, including motility, water and electrolyte transport, and luminal fermentation in the large intestine. A variety of stimuli by luminal contents, including mechanical and chemical stimuli, induce a variety of physiological reflex responses, including peristalsis and water secretion from mucosa. These responses are mediated and regulated by ENS, basically independent of the central nervous system (CNS). Moreover, the enteric endocrine system (EES) and the enteric immune system (EIS) are combined with ENS in order to regulate physiological function in the large intestine. We hope that the reader of the present review will appreciate that the ENS is the CNS for intestinal physiological functions.
