Japanese people are globally recognized as mycophilic, and the use of wild mushrooms as food in Japan has been described even in old literature. Several hundred mushroom species are reported to be edible in Japan. Based on long traditional wild mushroom consumption, the mushroom cultivation industry developed in Japan after World War Ⅱ. Since many wild mushrooms are known to be poisonous, knowledge of species identification is critical to use them safely. In this article I focus on the culture of mushrooms as food in Japan, and discuss background and future perspectives
