Chrono-nutrition is a nutritional concept that incorporates the circadian rhythm. Conventional nutrition defines the total amount of nutrients ingested per day, but the receiving organism fluctuates in a 24-h rhythm. In fact, the outcome of the same nutrient will change if it is consumed in the morning or at night. For example, reversing the contents of breakfast and dinner will alter appetite rhythms, blood glucose control, sleep and, ultimately, weight and the risk of lifestyle-related diseases. This is because part of the circadian clock tends to synchronize with eating rhythm, which in turn regulates metabolism and physiology. In other words, what we eat and when we eat it causes changes in our own constitution and behavior. Herein we review the research on chrono-nutrition to date, as well as the potential applications and prospects for food products.
