The writer sketched the various arrangements of fibre at every stage of staple fibre spinning done with a cotton spinning machine, and, by the help of a magnifying glass, studied parallelization and uniformity. As a result, he lighted upon the fact that a good yarn could not be obtained by parallelization only; that stress must be laid more upon uniformity than upon parallelization. Omission, as much as possible, of working process must be effected so as to give less fatigue to the fibre or to avoid breakage.
With the cotton spinning machine now in use, the best result would be obtained, when the fibre, after the carding engine stage is reached, is lead through the drawing one bead system to the stubbing machine, and, directly after, through the high draft spinning frame.
To attain to an ideal spinning process in future, however, six reformed cotton spinning card frames must be placed side by side as in a French worsted card, so as to bring together isx slivers by the lattice, and to direct then to the draft roller to give them draft, giving at the same time horizontal traverse winding on the bobbin. Next, give them draft over again by a contrivance combining the draft roller system for cotton spinning use and the horizontal traverse winding for worsted spinning use, also giving horizontal winding on the bobbin, and then finally spin them into a yarn by the high draft ring spinning frame.
In other words, the best possible spinning process would he attained by following the reformed cotton spinning process up to the carding frame stage, after that avoiding altogether the use of cans of any other contrivance for twist and winding by flyer in the fly frame; instead, giving them light twist by the tube, as in the worsted spinning, alike giving traverse winding on the bobbin. The point is to allow not more than two stages of process between the carding machine and the spinning frame.
