The cold refined pulp purified with 10% NaOH solution was acetylated by modified Jayme's method, and the relationship between the moisture content and the reactivity of the pulp was studied. In the course of drying, the reactivity of the pulp remained very good so far as the moisture content of the pulp was more than 18_??_20%, but the reactivity dropped suddenly after the water content fell below 18%. Neverthless the inactive pulp, obtained by drying, recovered its activity when re-moistened and the water content became again more than 18_??_20%. Irrespective of the history of the process of drying, the cold refined pulp is can to be acetylated smoothly in so far as its moisture content at the time of acetylation is higher than 18_??_20%.
When a hydrophilic solvent with high boiling point was added to the cold refined pulp, it was possible to keep its high reactivity even after is was dried.
