We investigated the dyeing behavior for wool fibers with p-phenylenediamine (pPDA) alone on current hair dye formation system. We compared the dyeing behavior for wool fiber dyed self-oxidizing pPDA solution by air with that for fiber dyed with model pPDA dyeing system of oxidation hair dye. The K/S-λ curves of wool fiber dyed with filtrate of air-oxidized pPDA solution differed from those of wool fiber dyed with model pPDA dyeing system. In model pPDA dyeing system (pH10) of oxidation hair dye, it was thought that not all of the compounds generated in the air-oxidized pPDA solution were dyed, but two types of oxidative dyes with characteristic absorption wavelengths of 480nm and 580nm were dyed. In addition, the oxidation dyes with absorption at 480nm and 580 nm were dyed on the wool fabrics were thought to be bicyclic 2-(4’-Amino aniline)-3-hydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone diamine and tricyclic Bandrowski’s base (BB), respectively. Based on these results, we proposed a new dyeing mechanism model, 2-(4’-Amino aniline)-1,4-diamino benzene formed at the solution/fiber surface diffuses into the fiber and is oxidized, lead to 2-(4’-aminoaniline)-1,4-benzoquinone diamine and BB.
