The king crabs Paralithodes camtschaticus and P. brevipes are important marine resources in the North Pacific Ocean. They hatch as zoea and metamorphose into glaucothoe. Glaucothoe settle for about 3 weeks. P. camtschaticus preferred gravel or fiber mesh net rather than sandy substratum. Settling behaviour of P. brevipes was observed in a 1m3 tank containing 4490 glaucothoe and hanging mesh nets, and in a 120 L container containing 150 glaucothoe and tiny filamentous algae on the wall. Glaucothoe attached to the nets near the surface, but fell down when molting to crab instar 1. Glaucothoe that attached to algae on the container wall did not fall off. The algae-community mat provides shelter for glaucothoe and juvenile king crabs, and food for the juveniles.
