The lipid and fatty acid compositions of the total lipids of the deep-sea fish species, genus Coryphaenoides, which are abyssal benthopelagic grenadiers, were investigated to clarify their ecology and to utilize their chemical components. Although the liver lipids of these fish mainly consisted of glycerol derivatives, such as triacylglycerols, the other organs contained significant levels of sphingolipids. The lipid classes among the species of Coryphaneoides were very similar to each other. This could be explained by the fact that thier physiology may be similar to each other among this genus. Consequently, the genus Coryphaenoiles Have consistently high levels of ceramide derivatives in their internal organs, and differ form other fish species rich in only glycerol derivatives.
