Abstract
One approach to characterize flashover in transient compartment fire and to clarify the physical or chemical processes which promote flashover is shown. This approach correlates the onset of flashover with the appearance of thermal instability, which is represented mathematically by the irregularity of the Jacobian of the energy conservation equations describing the growth of fire. The process promoting flashover is defined as those which cause thermal instability, and the discriminants to investigate the processes promoting thermal instability are derived. Some typical examples of the processes promoting flashover are studied.
