Colorectal stent placement has been covered by insurance in Japan since 2012 and has become widely performed as an essential endoscopic treatment method. The indication for colonic stent placement is malignant colorectal stenosis. The purposes of colonic stent placement are palliative treatment or preoperative stenosis release as a bridge to surgery Figure. Determining the indication is important for a safe procedure, and it is useful to use the ColoRectal Obstruction Scoring System (CROSS) for evaluation of colonic obstruction / stenosis. Although colorectal stent placement itself has become a relatively safe procedure due to recent advances in stent design, the presence or absence of an effect of colonic stent placement on long-term prognosis in BTS remains an important research topic. Since the complications associated with placement such as perforation have an adverse effect on long-term prognosis, it is necessary to perform a safe procedure. It is recommended that endoscopists should refer to “the mini-guideline” published by Japan Colonic Stent Safe Procedure Research Group, and always be in communication with surgeons to create a safe backup system.
