Abstract

The stent-stone complex (SSC), a complication of long-term biliary stent placement, refers to stones that develop, with the stent as the nucleus. Here, we report two cases of patients with an SSC associated with plastic stent placement and review 26 previously reported cases. SSCs tend to form more frequently in patients with residual bile duct stones and are difficult to treat because of adhesion to the stent or impaction in the bile duct. To prevent these complications, radical treatment or periodic replacement of stents should be considered instead of long-term stent placement in patients with bile duct stones.
