The purpose of this paper is to develop a grammar based on a localistic hypothesis of the verb for the stative constructions of English. The hypothesis of the verb, which was in the main reached in K. Inoue (1975), is that the semantic representation of virtually all the verbs in a language can be plausibly described in terms of that of the expressions involving existence or position and that there is a set of common patterns which serve to represent the underlying structures of the basic sentence constructions. Section I below gives a short account of the set of underlying patterns and of some assumptions concerning the form of the grammar on the basis of which the present study will be made. Section 2 presents an analysis of the stative constructions of English in terms of one of the patterns listed in Section 1.
