Abstract

Applications of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) to geochemistry began at the end of the 1970s. Today, SIMS is an indispensable and common analytical instrument in geochemical research, as are EPMA and SEM. However, while elemental mapping is common with EPMA, SIMS often remains a point analysis without reaching isotopic mapping. In addition, EPMA is often used only to confirm the analytical location of SIMS point analysis. This may be partly due to the historical fact that EPMA analysis has been applied to geoscience by petrologists and mineralogists, while SIMS analysis has been applied to geoscience by analytical chemists. In this presentation, some of the geochemical facts discovered by isotope mapping will be presented.
