Environment - The Interaction of Geochemistry with Engineering and Agriculture

Abstract

The Japanese Society of Geochemistry defines geochemistry as a field that addresses environmental issues by clarifying present-day material cycles on Earth and understanding global environmental transitions in the past through chemical data. The Society identifies environmental issues as a central focus, alongside the study of the chemical properties of the Earth and the Universe. Meanwhile, engineering and agricultural sciences are also required to address various societal challenges and propose practical solutions. Among these challenges, environmental problems have become increasingly critical. In this context, geochemistry plays a key role by offering a scientific foundation that complements and informs efforts in engineering and agriculture. This lecture outlines the key roles of field surveys, chemical analysis, and data analysis in addressing environmental issues from a geochemical perspective. Several case studies are introduced, followed by a discussion of future challenges.
