GENETICAL STUDIES OF THE VARNISHED EYE MUTANT IN BOMBYX MORI

The spontaneous mutant “varnished eye” (symbol ve) manifests a lustrous and small sized imaginal eye in homozygote. The ve mutation indistinguishably resembled to lu but was located on a separate chromosome. Scanning electron microscopic observation of the imaginal eye revealed that the surface of ve eye was rather flattened and smooth with ca. 40 small pimple-like structures of the facet showing a distinct contrast with the regular hexagonal pattern of ca. 3, 000 facets in normal or lu eye. The facet arrangement on the surface of lu eye was fairly regular, but fused (or undifferentiated) structures of chitinous membrane were observed in some places. The facet of lu eye was regular hexagon in shape with smaller size than that of normal eye.
Linkage tests showed that the ve gene was linked with E^Kp which had been known to be located on the 6th chromosome at 0.0 position. The locus of ve gene was determined to be 11.1 position on the 6th chromosome through a three-point experiment involving E^Ca, F and ve.
