The entanglement of polymer chains is a fundamental concept in polymer chemistry. It is similar to the mechanical bonding of interlocked molecules, which are being studied for applications in molecular devices, molecular machines, and various functional frameworks. The mechanical bonding between the macrocyclic components and penetrated components is a unique type of mechanical bond, and its bonding chemistry and structural characteristics have been studied in the fields of physical organic chemistry and supramolecular chemistry. In this column, the author reflects on the evolution of educational and research in her mentor’s laboratory, which led her, as a researcher in synthetic and functional chemistry, to expand her research into polymer chemistry after previously working on mechanical bonds. Furthermore, now in a position to lead her research, the author expresses her desire to challenge herself to construct new structural mechanical bonds using host-guest chemistry from the perspective of organic chemistry.
