The technologies for modifying plastics by blending rubbery materials are summarized. Rubber-modified plastics are widely available in industry at present. Most of them have been developed to impart toughness to plastics. The main mechanisms of the mechanical toughening are (1) multiple crazes, (2) cavitation, and (3) shear yielding. Furthermore, optical properties, rheological properties, and crystallization behaviors during flow for rubber-modified plastics are also reviewed.
