Abstract
For the purpose of obtaining co-vulcanized polyethylene (PE) and rubber, PE-butadiene graft co-polymer (GP), which had been prepared from low density PE and butadiene by γ-irradiation, was blended with cis-1, 4, polybutadiene (BR).
After vulcanizing by dicumyl peroxide (DCP), tetramethylthiuram disulfide (TT) and TT-DCP mixture, the properties of vulcanized GP/BR blend polymers (BG) were compared with those of similarly vulcanized PE/BR blend polymers (BP).
By 0.5 phr of DCP, co-vulcanization of PE and BR in BP is scarcely occurred. In the case of BG, however, GP and BR have been co-vulcanized effectively by 0.5 phr of DCP. 2 phr of TT and 1 phr of TT-0.3 phr of DCP mixture are also able to co-vulcanize GP and BR.
The vulcanized BG has the higher increasing ratios of modulus and hardness than those of BP. It has better tensile strength, tear strength and abrasion resistance than those of BP.
