Abstract
As we previously reported, a number of oblique streaks like kink bands were observed on the fatigued region of a nylon tire cord filament.
In this paper, nylon 6 bristle was used as a model to observe a fatigue behavior of a nylon tire cord filament.
The growth of kink bands of bristle and the relation between kind bands and strength loss of bristle as a result of increased fatiguing time are discussed.
Kink bands and their growth behavior which mainly suffered from compressional strain were also observed on the fatigued region of bristle by means of microscopic and electronmicroscopic technique.
In the region where kink bands grew, it is observed under polarized light that orientations of crystallites were sharply bent.
As the fatigue time increased, the kind bands became larger and deeper, and at last They grew into a crack.
It was emphasized that kind band itself did not affect directly the strength loss of bristle, but it could be the forerunner of cracking. The crack caused a strength loss of filament.
Authors considered that strength loss of nylon bristle is caused by the growth of kink band, and also in the case of tire cord its fatigue behavior may be similar.
