To improve the carbon black surface, the postgrafting of polymers onto the surface by the reaction of pendant glycidyl groups of grafted polymer on the surface with functional polymers having terminal amino groups was investigated. The grafting of polymers having pendant glycidyl groups was achieved by the copolymerization of methyl methacrylate(MMA) with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) initiated by azo groups introduced onto the surface. Poly(MMA-co-GMA) grafted onto carbon black surface was found to react with functional polymers, such as poly (ethyleneimine) (PEI), diamine-terminated poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-NH2), and diamine-terminated poly (dimethylsiloxane)(SDA), and the corresponding polymers are postgrafted onto grafted polymer on carbon black surface: the percentage of postgrafting of PEI, PEO-NH2 and SDA was determined to be 13. 7, 27.4 and 4.5%, respectively. The percentage of postgrafting increased with increasing GMA content of grafted chains on the carbon black surface. The number of postgrafted PEI decreased with increasing molecular weight of PEI.
